Les Rambles, Barcelona
Les Rambles is the most famous promenade in Barcelona, it connects Plaça
de Catalunya with the city’s seafront.
La Rambla was originally a water stream coming down outside the city walls. In the 16th century a university and some convents were built along the river, and then, when the city wall was torn down, in the 19th century, this old buildings were also demolished and new buildings were erected, but now, the original buildings are remembered in some of the names of the five different parts of Les Rambles: Rambla de Canaletes, the first part, takes the name of
the famous “Canaleta fountain”, the second “Rambla” is the Rambla dels Estudis, named for Estudis Generals University built in the 16th century, the next Rambla is Rambla de Sant Josep where is located the famous “Boqueria” market, the next is Rambla dels Caputxins this part takes the name of a demolished Caputxi Monastery and here there are our Opera Theater, Gran Teatre del Liceo. The last Rambla is Rambla de Santa Mónica, named after a Convent, now Centre d’ Art Santa Monica, and where you can find the Colon Monument.
